Bone Health Assessment
⏱️ Consultation length: 1 hour
Includes medical history, REMS scan & results review
A REMS bone health consultation provides a comprehensive assessment of bone strength, fracture risk, and overall musculoskeletal health. We take a holistic approach, considering skeletal integrity alongside muscle health and lifestyle factors. The appointment combines a detailed clinical history with a non-invasive REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) scan to give a clear picture of current bone status and future risk.
Medical History — detailed risk review
We start with an in-depth medical history. Key areas include family history of osteoporosis or fractures, any low-trauma fractures, and medicines that may affect bone density (e.g. steroids, aromatase inhibitors). We also review comorbidities such as thyroid disorders, inflammatory conditions, or early menopause.
Lifestyle factors—diet (including calcium and protein), vitamin D, alcohol intake, smoking, and physical activity—are explored as they strongly influence bone and muscle health. This stage helps identify risk factors and screen for secondary causes of bone loss.
Sarcopenia Assessment — muscle strength & function
Because muscle and bone are tightly linked, we include screening for sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass/strength). This may involve grip strength, gait speed, or sit-to-stand testing, and body-composition analysis where available.
Identifying early sarcopenia supports tailored advice on protein intake, resistance training, balance work, and falls-prevention—measures that protect bone, joints, and independence.
REMS Scan — ultrasound bone density
The REMS scan is a painless, ultrasound-based test performed at the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Using radiofrequency analysis, it provides precise, radiation-free measurements of bone mineral density and bone quality, with immediate results.
Unlike DXA, REMS can reduce artefacts from degenerative change, often giving a clearer representation of fracture risk.
Instant Results Explained — your numbers made clear
We review your bone density metrics and Fragility Score in clear, accessible terms and set them in the context of your overall health. You’ll have ample time for questions so you leave confident about what the results mean and what to do next.
Shared Management Plan — next steps together
Together we create a tailored plan. This may include optimising calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing and resistance exercise, balance/falls strategies, and support for modifiable risks (e.g. smoking, excess alcohol). If indicated, we’ll discuss pharmacological options or referral to a specialist. The emphasis is shared decision-making so you can actively protect and improve bone and muscle health.
📄 What to Bring
- Any previous DEXA or REMS scan reports
- Relevant medical documents (e.g. blood test results, consultant letters)
- A list of your current medications and supplements
If you don’t have copies, let us know in advance and we can advise on how to request them.
